Where to Eat in Kāʻanapali, Maui: Four Nights of Receipts, One Plan
A Kāʻanapali dining plan built from what we actually paid — the occasion dinner, the once-only sushi, the poolside line that adds up, and the breakfast.
This is a city guide with a different rule: every place on it is somewhere we paid to eat, and the number is the number. That makes it shorter than the guides that list forty restaurants. It also makes it true. As we go back, it grows.

The occasion dinner — Son'z at Swan Court
Waterfalls, a lit lagoon, swans, a steakhouse that's about the steak. For a milestone night on a lagoon, $243.85 for two is within sight of a comparable steakhouse in Los Angeles — the resort premium is smaller than you'd guess. Book early in the trip and early in the evening for the light. Full review.
The once-only night — Japengo
Pacific-rim sushi with an ocean-facing bar. The fish carried it; the $261.90 check is where resort pricing showed most against town sushi. Good, once. Full review.
The line item to respect — Umalu
The poolside grill is where a resort quietly wins the week. Nothing individually outrageous; four visits landed north of $1,000, including a $397 "lunch" where the drinks did the work. A cooler of snacks and one real order a day would have halved it. Full review.
The one to lean on — the package breakfast
Buffet breakfast for two came with the Costco Travel package; only tips touched the folio. Same terrace every morning, no decisions before coffee. If your booking includes breakfast, build the day around it — what the perk stack was really worth.
What we'd do differently
- Reserve earlier. Merriman's in Kapalua closes at 8 PM and we never found the night. Book the off-property dinner before you land.
- Ask for the check at the table, not the folio, if you're on a card with a restaurant bonus — on-property dining billed to the room posts as lodging, not dining. Why that matters.
- Budget pool days like restaurant days. Because on the folio, they are.
