Resort-dining reviews love adjectives and hate numbers. Here's four nights of eating at the Hyatt Regency Maui with the actual receipts attached.
Son'z at Swan Court — the occasion dinner
Waterfalls, a lit lagoon, actual swans. Best Steak at the Maui ʻAipono Awards, a ~1,500-bottle cellar with a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence — and the setting somehow still outruns the résumé.
For a milestone-night steakhouse on a lagoon, that's within sight of what a comparable LA steakhouse runs — the "resort tax" here is smaller than you'd guess. Verdict: worth it. Book it early in the trip and early in the evening.
Japengo — the sushi night

The quality carried it, but this is the meal where resort pricing shows most vs off-property sushi. Verdict: good, once.
Umalu — the poolside trap line
The poolside grill is where a resort quietly wins the week. Nothing individually outrageous; everything cumulatively real:
Verdict: budget the pool days like restaurant days, because they are. A cooler of snacks and one real order a day would have halved this without dimming the trip.
The package breakfast — the sleeper win
Buffet breakfast for two came with our Costco Travel package — menu value roughly $80/morning for two; only the tips ($15–16/day) touched the folio. Four mornings ≈ $320 of real value, and the ritual — same terrace, no decisions before coffee — was the quiet luxury of the trip.
The honest summary
Eat the occasion dinners without guilt, respect the poolside line items, and let the package carry breakfast. That's the whole strategy.
