How Much Are Points Worth When You Earn Them at Dinner?

4X at a restaurant is 4% or 8% depending on what you do next. The floor-vs-transfer math, our own 1.0¢ receipt, and how to tell which you'll actually get.

4% vs 8%same 4X, two outcomes

Earn rates are advertised as if a point had a price. It doesn't. A point has a floor — what the issuer will always give you for it — and a ceiling that depends on what you find. The gap between them is the entire hobby, and it shows up on a dinner check more clearly than anywhere else.

The floor: what we actually got

That's the number to hold in your head. It's not a scandal — Amex publishes it — it's just the floor, and we paid it out of convenience. Chase's Ultimate Rewards and Capital One's miles have their own floors for portal and statement redemptions; each program page lists what its official site states.

Turning an earn rate into a percentage

The math is one line: earn rate × cents per point = return on the check.

Notice where the cash-back card sits: above the floor of a 3X points card (3% vs 3%… at 1¢, identical) and below a 4X card at any value. If you'll only ever redeem at the floor, a strong cash-back card is honest money and less work. Transferable points only win if you'll do the transfer.

What decides which number you get

  • Whether you'll search for an award. Transfers are one-way and irreversible; the value exists only after you've found the flight or room. Our 3¢ estimate for Hawaii flights was real — we just never ran the search before paying with points.
  • Whose name is on the account. Points transfer only into a loyalty account in the cardholder's own name. Booking for someone else changes the math.
  • How the restaurant bills. Resort dining on a hotel folio earns the hotel category, not the dining bonus — our Hyatt dinners posted as lodging.
  • Caps. Amex Gold's 4X stops at $50,000 of restaurant spend a year, per the issuer page. Fine for a couple; not for a company card.

The practical version

  1. Find the highest restaurant rate you'd actually carry — the table is here, read off issuer pages.
  2. Decide honestly whether you'll transfer. If no, value at the floor and compare to 3% cash back.
  3. If yes, learn one program's partners well (how transfers work) and run one award search before your next redemption — the twenty-minute habit that would have changed our own number.

Put your monthly dining spend into the calculator and it'll show both outcomes side by side.
