Best Credit Cards for Dining: The Earn Rates, Read Off the Issuer Pages

Which cards earn the most at restaurants, where the caps are, and which dining credits are real money — every rate read off the issuer's own page, dated.

4Xhighest restaurant rate on file

"Best card for dining" articles usually rank by which card pays the writer. This one ranks by the number on the issuer's page, with the date we read it, and it links you straight to the issuer. Nothing here pays us.

Two rules before the table. First, the earn rate is half the answer — a point is only worth what you can redeem it for, and we've paid exactly 1.0¢ for ours. Second, credits are not cash: a monthly $10 you have to remember to use is worth less than a $10 bill. Both get their own guides: what points are worth at dinner and dining credits, honestly.

Restaurant earn rates, as published

Hilton Honors Surpass lists 6 points per dollar at U.S. restaurants — a bigger number in a currency that redeems very differently, which is the whole reason a rate table can't be a ranking.

Each card's full terms sheet is on the cards page — earn table, credits, the welcome offer as the issuer states it, and a list of anything we couldn't confirm.

What the table can't tell you

The currency decides the value. 4X Membership Rewards at Amex's Pay-with-Points floor is 4% back. The same 4X transferred into an award worth 2¢ a point is 8%. 3% cash back is 3%, always, with nothing to learn. Which currency to earn first is the real question; the earn rate is the tiebreaker.

Caps are real. Amex Gold's 4X ends at $50,000 of restaurant spend per calendar year, then drops to 1X. For two people eating out, that's a high ceiling. For a business card paying for team dinners, it isn't.

"Dining" is defined by the merchant code, not the menu. Resort restaurants billed to a room folio typically post as lodging, not diningour Son'z dinner landed on the Hyatt folio, and a hotel folio earns the hotel rate, not the restaurant rate. If you're on a points-earning trip, ask for the check at the table.

The credits that touch dinner

Several of these cards carry dining-shaped statement credits. As the issuer pages state them:

Whether those offset the annual fee depends entirely on whether you'd have spent that money at those merchants anyway. We show the math, and the honest breakage, in dining credits explained.

How we'd choose

Then run your own spend through the calculator. The right card is the one whose numbers survive your receipts, not ours.
