Earning Points on Concerts and Events: What the Card Pages Actually Say
Which cards publish an entertainment or ticketing earn rate, what counts as entertainment on the issuer page, and the merchant-code trap at the box office.
Concert and event spend is the category the points sites skip, because it's small next to travel. It isn't small to us — it's a good share of what we actually do with a weekend — and a few issuers publish a real rate for it. Here's what the card pages state, and the one thing the pages don't warn you about.
The rates, as published
Read the wording. The Venture cards' 5X is for purchases made through Capital One Entertainment — the issuer's own ticketing portal — not for tickets bought anywhere. Savor's 3% is the broader "entertainment" category, which Capital One defines on the card page. Both card pages, with the exact language and everything we couldn't confirm, are here and here.
The merchant-code trap at the box office
A category bonus pays on the merchant's classification, not on what you bought. Tickets can post as:
- the ticketing platform (often "entertainment" or "ticket agencies"),
- the venue (an arena, a theatre — sometimes coded as entertainment, sometimes not),
- a resale marketplace (frequently not entertainment),
- a hotel or resort, when the show is on property and billed to the room — the same folio trap that turned our resort dinners into lodging spend.
The practical rule: if the rate matters, buy from the primary seller with the card whose page names that seller, and keep the receipt. It's the only way to know what posted.
Presales and access
Several premium cards advertise ticket presales or cardholder-only events. We didn't fetch those terms tonight, so they aren't on this page — anything we publish about access will come from the issuer's own benefit page with the date we read it, and from our own tickets.
What we'll add, and when
This section grows the same way the rest of the site does: from receipts. A show we paid for, the card we used, what posted, whether a presale actually got us the seats.
